Collision Between Car and Motorcycle on Quiet Roads
Fraudulently Claimed Insurance Payouts Worth 20 Million Won
Caught by Police Through Speed Camera Analysis
Delivery drivers who deliberately caused traffic accidents to fraudulently claim insurance payouts have been referred to the prosecution in large numbers.
The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced on November 26 that it had referred six employees of a delivery agency, including a 39-year-old identified as A, to the prosecution without detention on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud, among other offenses.
From September 2021 to June this year, they are accused of intentionally causing traffic accidents in the Mokpo area and fraudulently claiming a total of 20 million won in insurance payouts over three separate incidents.
As colleagues at the delivery agency, they selected quiet roads as the locations for their crimes. They used cars and motorcycles, driving towards each other from opposite directions to stage collisions and make them appear as real accidents.
The suspects, including A, initially denied any wrongdoing.
However, the police analyzed speed camera photos and found that the vehicle driven by A had already been damaged in the same area before the alleged accident. They also confirmed that the suspects split the settlement money on the day the insurance payouts were issued, thereby proving the charges.
A police official stated, "Insurance fraud involving traffic accidents not only poses risks but also undermines the fundamental purpose of insurance and erodes social trust. We will continue to conduct rigorous investigations into insurance fraud."
