"A Participatory Lifestyle Culture Festival"
Kimchi-Making and Rice Cake-Making Experiences Offered
Jeonju City in North Jeolla Province will hold the "2025 Jeolla Gamyeong Day" event, titled "Danggeurangkke Nanurangkke," at the western site of Jeolla Gamyeong from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on November 30.
According to the city on November 26, Jeolla Gamyeong is a historic site that represented Jeolla Province during the Joseon Dynasty, serving as a political, cultural, and economic center. This year’s event is designed as a participatory lifestyle culture festival, where citizens and tourists can experience a modern reinterpretation of traditional kimchi-making culture.
Through this event, the city aims to revive the gradually fading tradition of winter community preparation and to further promote the historical significance of Jeolla Gamyeong.
The event will feature a total of five programs, including kimchi-making, rice cake-making, and Joseon-era job experience activities. Anyone can participate for free on site.
In particular, the event will recreate scenes of past village communities preparing for winter together, bringing citizens and tourists together at Jeolla Gamyeong to make kimchi in a unique communal setting.
The kimchi-making experience will take place in three sessions, using a total of 500 heads of cabbage. Participants can take home a portion of the kimchi they make, while the remaining kimchi will be delivered to local seniors living alone and other neighbors in need through the Jeonju Welfare Foundation 'Jeonju Saram.'
The Jeonju Saemaeul Women's Association will also participate in the kimchi-mixing and sharing activities, adding a warm touch to the value of tradition. Advance reservations for the kimchi-making experience are closed, but a limited number of on-site registrations will be available on the day of the event.
Additionally, there will be programs for families, including a traditional rice cake-making experience where participants pound rice to make Injeolmi, and Joseon-era job experience programs such as fortune-telling, archery, pansori, and Oriental painting caricatures with historical characters (the Birth of the Jeolla Governor).
The event will conclude with a kimchi donation ceremony and lively traditional performances, such as the Gijeopnori, to help participants relax after kimchi-making.
A city official stated, "Kimchi-making culture is more than just preparing food; it is a valuable tradition that brings neighbors together and strengthens the community. We hope this event centered on Jeolla Gamyeong will be an opportunity for everyone to enjoy traditional culture and practice the value of sharing."
