It was belatedly confirmed that a 9-month-old baby, the child of a Japanese couple who were injured in a collision after a vehicle crossed the center line in Seoul, died during treatment.
The Yongsan Police Station in Seoul announced on the 25th that it has additionally charged a taxi driver in his 70s, identified as Mr. A, with causing death by traffic accident under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents, in addition to the original charge of causing injury.
Mr. A is accused of causing an accident at around 7 p.m. on the 21st of last month in Yongsan District, when he was driving a taxi, crossed the center line, and collided with a passenger car coming from the opposite direction.
As a result of this accident, a Japanese couple in their 20s who were riding in the taxi suffered fractures, and their 9-month-old daughter was transported to the hospital unconscious but was reported to have died on the 19th.
Mr. A initially claimed sudden unintended acceleration, but during the police investigation, he reportedly admitted that he had pressed the wrong pedal. No evidence of drug or alcohol use was found in Mr. A.
The police are currently considering whether to request an arrest warrant for Mr. A.
