Arrest Warrant Dismissed for Man in His 70s Accused of Gross Negligence in 'Sinwol-dong Apartment Fire'

Arrest Warrant Dismissed for Man in His 70s Accused of Gross Negligence in 'Sinwol-dong Apartment Fire' Yonhap News

The court has dismissed the arrest warrant for a man in his 70s who was urgently detained for causing a fire through gross negligence at an apartment complex in Sinwol-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.

On November 24, Park Chanseok, the judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Southern District Court, rejected the arrest warrant after conducting a pretrial detention hearing for Mr. A, a 76-year-old suspect accused of gross negligence resulting in fire.

Judge Park stated, "Considering the suspect's residence, occupation, family relationships, the circumstances of the incident, his actions after the incident, and the current status of the investigation, it is difficult to see a risk of flight or evidence destruction."

Mr. A, an apartment official, is accused of causing a fire through gross negligence at around 5:33 a.m. on November 21 in the waste paper collection area on the first floor of a nine-story above-ground and two-story underground apartment building.

As a result of the fire, 52 residents who inhaled smoke were transported to the hospital, and 18 vehicles, including those parked in the first-floor piloti parking lot, were completely destroyed.
