According to the county on November 24, the agreement ceremony was attended by about 150 officials from both regions, including Sim Deokseop, Governor of Gochang County, and Kim Seong, Governor of Jangheung County. The event originated from the increased mutual interest and friendly exchanges expressed between the two areas earlier this year.
Since then, both sides have continued discussions on reciprocal visits to major festivals and exchanges among working-level officials, further specifying directions for cooperation in various fields such as administration, tourism, culture, and agriculture.
The sisterhood agreement ceremony proceeded in the following order: introduction of participants, viewing of a promotional video, speeches by the heads of both counties, signing of the agreement, and a commemorative photo session. The two counties agreed to pursue broad and practical exchanges in diverse areas, aiming to enhance residents' quality of life and achieve shared prosperity for their regions.
In particular, Gochang County and Jangheung County not only share abundant natural and tourism resources but also have a historical connection, as both served as key bases for the Bukjeop and Namjeop factions during the Donghak Peasant Revolution. This sisterhood agreement is therefore expected to further strengthen the foundation for solidarity and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two regions.
Kim Seong, Governor of Jangheung County, stated, "The sisterhood agreement with Gochang County will serve as an opportunity for deeper exchanges and joint development, based on the natural, cultural, and historical ties our regions share. We will actively identify practical cooperative projects to create new growth engines for our communities together."
Sim Deokseop, Governor of Gochang County, remarked, "I am very pleased that our two counties have formed a meaningful partnership here in Jeongnamjin, Jangheung County. Through this sisterhood agreement, I hope our regions will continue vibrant exchanges across various fields based on trust and friendship, and that we will open a new chapter of mutually beneficial development."
Meanwhile, with this agreement, the number of domestic sister organizations of Gochang County has expanded to a total of 11 (10 cities and 1 navy unit). Since its first sisterhood agreement with Gwanak-gu in Seoul in 1996, Gochang County has formed partnerships with Dongnae-gu in Busan, Sangju in Gyeongbuk Province, Seongbuk-gu in Seoul, the Gochang Navy Unit, Songpa-gu in Seoul, Goryeong County in Gyeongbuk Province, Mapo-gu in Seoul, Nam-gu in Gwangju, and Jeongseon County in Gangwon Province, continuing a variety of exchange and cooperation activities.
