Gangnam District to Host Academy on "100-Year Urban Planning" on the 27th

Sharing Future Urban Strategies Beyond Maintenance Projects

Gangnam District in Seoul (District Mayor Cho Sungmyung) will host the "4th Maintenance Project Academy" on November 27 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the main auditorium on the second floor of the Gangnam Residents’ Center. Unlike previous maintenance project education sessions, this lecture will stand out by exploring the direction of urban planning for Gangnam over the next 100 years from the perspectives of both domestic and international experts.

The academy will be held in two sessions, featuring lectures by a world-renowned architect rarely seen in Korea and a key policy designer from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, drawing significant attention. Gangnam District expects this event to provide an integrated understanding of future urban strategies for Seoul and Gangnam, going beyond the individual task of maintenance projects.

In the first session, Chris van Duijn, Managing Partner at the headquarters of the world-renowned architectural group OMA in the Netherlands, will deliver a lecture on "The Future of Residential Development." He will introduce residential development methods that reflect climate and topographical conditions, as well as trends in international urban design, based on innovative residential projects on the slopes of Busan. This is expected to offer insights into the utilization of complex topographical features in Seoul and the design of sustainable residential models. The lecture will be accompanied by simultaneous on-site interpretation.

The second session will be led by Kang Byungkeun, Chief Architect of Seoul and Professor Emeritus at Konkuk University. Professor Kang will present the future vision of Gangnam through strategies and simulations that address three key urban challenges facing Seoul: realizing a green-centered city, building a hyper-connected artificial intelligence (AI) city, and restoring social networks. These strategies will be detailed at the levels of living zones, autonomous districts, and specific areas. The session will provide a multidimensional view of how Gangnam, as the central axis of Seoul, can transform by combining smart technology with ecological urban planning.

The Maintenance Project Academy is an educational program operated to enhance residents’ understanding of urban planning and to provide direct information related to maintenance projects. Gangnam District plans to continue expanding effective education in collaboration with various experts in the future. This lecture will accommodate around 300 participants, and anyone interested in maintenance projects or urban planning can attend the event on the day without prior registration.

Cho Sungmyung, Mayor of Gangnam District, stated, “For Gangnam, the heart of Seoul, to move forward as a future city that coexists with nature and embraces cutting-edge technology, residents’ understanding and participation are more important than anything else,” adding, “I hope this special lecture will serve as an opportunity to broaden perspectives not only on maintenance projects but also on Seoul’s overall urban planning.”
