On November 23, the Provincial Office of Education announced that the "96th Anniversary Student Independence Movement Commemoration 38th Jeonnam Superintendent of Education Marathon Competition and 2025 Kim Daejung Marathon Competition," held at Mokpo Sports Complex and surrounding areas, concluded successfully.

Approximately 10,000 people participated in this year’s event. Among them, 4,731 were members of the education community, more than doubling last year’s figure of about 1,800. This was the first time the two marathon competitions were held together, with the aim of jointly commemorating the historical significance of the Student Independence Movement and the legacy of former President Kim Daejung.

The opening ceremony featured a performance by the Samgye Warrant Officer High School wind band, followed by a student representative reading the “Pledge of Commitment.” There was also a segment introducing students and staff from Hauido, the hometown of former President Kim Daejung.

On the 400-meter main stadium track, a performance reenacting the Student Independence Movement took place, while related videos were shown on the large electronic display. At the auxiliary stadium, various experiential activities were offered, including Taegukgi face painting, brooch making, and a history quiz. An exhibition of materials from the Gwangju Student Independence Movement Memorial Hall was also held.

Safety management was strengthened. In cooperation with the police, local governments, and medical institutions, 114 safety personnel and 8 emergency vehicles were deployed to ensure an immediate response in case of any incidents.

A student from Mokpo said, “It was a meaningful time to reflect on the significance of the Student Independence Movement,” and added, “I definitely want to participate again next year.”

Superintendent Kim Daejung stated, “Every step we take today embodies the courage of the Student Independence Movement and the spirit of peace of former President Kim Daejung,” and added, “We will continue to expand this open educational festival created together by students and residents of the province.”

The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education plans to address any shortcomings identified in the operation of this year’s event and continue the joint hosting of the two marathon competitions in line with their original purpose.
