Measures to Prevent the Spread
Following the Outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza
Changwon Special City in South Gyeongsang Province has implemented full access control measures for the Junam Reservoir area (including the ecological trail and ecological learning facilities) following a confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) at the Junam Reservoir Lotus Complex.
In response to the recent nationwide spread of AI, Changwon City has been focusing its monitoring activities on the Junam Reservoir area. On November 9, during monitoring, a single bean goose showing symptoms such as neck tilting, inability to stand, and inability to fly was rescued but died the following day. A detailed AI test confirmed a case of highly pathogenic AI (H5N1 type) on November 21.
To prevent the spread of AI, the city is following the Wild Bird Avian Influenza Standard Operating Procedures (AI SOP) by posting banners and information boards to restrict access to trails and nearby farm roads in the Junam Reservoir area, and is deploying on-site monitors at key locations to strengthen efforts to prevent further spread of AI.
Seo Younghyuk, Director of the Junam Reservoir Division, said, "It is very unfortunate that we have to close Junam Reservoir, a national ecological tourism site visited by many citizens," adding, "The safety of our citizens is non-negotiable, and it is urgent to prevent the spread of AI to livestock farms. We ask for your active cooperation, as these measures are essential to prevent the spread of AI."
