As the Seoul Metropolitan Council passed a bill to abolish the Student Human Rights Ordinance, the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission issued a statement urging careful consideration of this decision.
On November 21, Ahn Changho, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, released a statement requesting that the Seoul Metropolitan Council reconsider the abolition of the Student Human Rights Ordinance.
He cited concerns that abolishing the ordinance could create a gap in remedies for student rights violations and significantly hinder the systematic and stable execution of student human rights affairs.
Chairperson Ahn emphasized that the ordinance serves as a means to realize human rights-friendly schools, and that protecting student rights and ensuring teachers' authority are not mutually exclusive.
He further pointed out that most of the current difficulties in schools stem from a structure that relies on individual teachers' abilities to resolve issues, rather than providing integrated support for both students and teachers.
Chairperson Ahn stated, "It is essential to prioritize in-depth discussions with school members and stakeholders regarding the desirable direction of the Student Human Rights Ordinance."
