Yeongcheon Temporarily Allows Use of Standard Waste Bags for Kimchi-Making Waste

No Change for Businesses Generating Large Amounts of Food Waste

Yeongcheon City announced that, in response to the peak kimchi-making season, it will temporarily allow the use of standard volume-based waste bags exclusively for kimchi-related waste from November 24 until December 31.

During the kimchi preparation process, large quantities of cabbage and radish roots or peels, as well as pepper seeds, are generated, which are difficult to dispose of using the existing food waste disposal system. To minimize inconvenience for residents, the city has implemented this temporary measure.

A city official requested, "Please separate the waste generated during kimchi preparation as general waste and dispose of it in volume-based waste bags of 50 liters or less. However, do not mix it with other general waste when disposing of it."

Salted cabbage, radishes, fermented seafood, seasonings, and other items generated during the kimchi-making process should be disposed of as food waste. Before disposal, remove as much moisture and foreign matter as possible, and place the waste in designated food waste collection containers.

However, businesses that generate large amounts of food waste must continue to use the existing method of disposal, either by using designated containers or by processing through contracted companies.

Choi Kimoon, Mayor of Yeongcheon, stated, "During the kimchi-making season, more food waste is generated than usual, causing greater inconvenience for residents. During the temporary allowance period, the city will do its utmost to ensure that everyone can conveniently dispose of kimchi-related waste."

He added, "We kindly ask everyone to strictly follow the basic disposal rules, such as removing excess moisture."
