Seongbuk District Named Outstanding District for Fifth Consecutive Year in Seoul Eco Mileage Evaluation

Recognized for Achievements in Citizen-Participatory Carbon Neutrality Initiatives

On November 20, Seongbuk District in Seoul (Mayor Lee Seungro) announced that it had been selected as an outstanding district in the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Eco Mileage District Evaluation. Seongbuk District achieved remarkable results among the 25 districts evaluated from October of last year to September of this year, continuing its record of winning the award for five consecutive years.

‘Eco Mileage’ is a citizen participation program that awards mileage points to households and businesses that voluntarily reduce their energy use-such as electricity, water, and gas-based on the reduction rate. Individual members who join the program can earn between 10,000 and 50,000 mileage points every six months if they reduce their usage by more than 5% compared to the average consumption during the same period over the previous two years. The accumulated mileage points can be exchanged for Onnuri gift certificates or Seoul Sarang gift certificates, and can also be used to pay local taxes, gas bills, and management fees.

This year’s evaluation consisted of four categories: membership registration performance, membership management performance, promotional performance, and implementation of the building reporting and grading system. Seongbuk District performed well in all categories, receiving especially high marks for its active promotional efforts and increased registration rates, which were closely linked to citizen-participatory carbon neutrality initiatives.

Seongbuk District holds the annual ‘Eco Mileage Dong Competition’ in collaboration with 20 community centers to encourage broader participation. This year, in addition to online promotions, the district used various channels such as community bulletin boards and meeting materials for resident organizations to encourage participation. On ‘Energy Day’ (August 22), the district conducted a joint campaign with the public, private, and academic sectors, and launched a ‘Carbon Neutral Tumbler Challenge’ with local universities to foster a culture of action among young people.

Mayor Lee Seungro stated, “It is very meaningful that Seongbuk District has received the Seoul Eco Mileage award for five consecutive years,” adding, “We will continue to lead the way toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 by implementing a variety of carbon neutrality initiatives together with our 430,000 residents.”
