Aiming for Completion in 2031
Building a Mega Cultural Platform Integrating K-pop, Professional Baseball, Exhibitions, and Tourism
Governor Kim Taeheum of Chungnam held a press conference on the 18th and announced plans to build the country's largest dome stadium in Cheonan and Asan.
Governor Kim Taeheum of Chungnam has made a surprise announcement regarding the construction of a 1 trillion won dome stadium in the Cheonan-Asan Station area, aiming to transform it into a massive future city hub integrating K-pop, sports, and tourism. Upon its completion in 2031, it is expected to become the largest dome stadium in the country.
The Chungnam provincial government is moving forward with plans to build an ultra-large dome stadium in Cheonan-Asan, the transportation hub of South Korea, where professional baseball games and K-pop concerts can be held year-round.
With this, the largest dome stadium in Korea will be established, and Cheonan and Asan are expected to emerge as global K-pop hubs.
At a press conference held at the provincial government press center on the 18th, Governor Kim stated, "We will promote the construction of a future-oriented, integrated cultural and sports complex- a dome stadium- in the Cheonan-Asan Station area, blending sports, culture, and tourism, to foster Cheonan and Asan as a cultural city with a population of 1.5 million."
The Cheonan-Asan dome stadium will be built on a 200,000-square-meter site, located a 10 to 20-minute walk from KTX Cheonan-Asan Station, with an investment of 1 trillion won by 2031, and will have a capacity of over 50,000 seats.
Governor Kim explained, "The Cheonan-Asan dome stadium will be a year-round, open cultural space for citizens, unaffected by rain, snow, heat, or cold. Leveraging the accessibility of KTX, it will serve as a comprehensive leisure platform for all of Korea, capable of hosting a variety of events including sports, performances, exhibitions, and festivals."
He also stated, "In consultation with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), we plan to host more than 30 professional baseball games annually, as well as football and ice rink events, and to attract 150 to 200 days of K-pop concerts, exhibitions, and corporate events each year."
Additionally, to strengthen K-pop performance capabilities, a joint branding strategy will be pursued in collaboration with major entertainment companies such as HYBE, SM Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment.
Furthermore, in connection with the metropolitan multi-modal transfer center to be built near the dome stadium, private sector projects such as hotels, shopping, and cultural facilities will be expanded. The project is also expected to revitalize the local commercial district, boost the tourism industry, and create jobs for young people.
Governor Kim stated, "We will begin site selection and a feasibility study for the dome stadium in December to accelerate the project, and will consider various funding options, including private investment and securing national funds."
He emphasized, "We will minimize the financial burden on residents while ensuring a feasible financial structure through expert consultation and public discussion, and will implement the project with transparent and responsible administration."
Governor Kim cited the example of Dubai, which grew from a desert city into a global hub for tourism, finance, and aviation, saying, "The Cheonan-Asan dome stadium will become the focal point of K-pop and Korean culture, as well as a new cultural and economic center."
Currently, the only dome stadium in Korea is the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, which has a capacity of 16,000 seats.
