Shedding Light on Expanded Visual Art Discourse in the "After Cinema" Era
Pusan National University (President Choi Jaewon) Film Research Institute and the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art announced on the 18th that they will jointly host an academic symposium titled "Cinema, the Cinematic, and the Boundaries of Film" on the 29th at Theater Eulsuk, located on the first basement floor of the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art. This event is held in conjunction with the "2025 Busan Museum of Contemporary Art Cinemedia-After Cinema" exhibition, aiming to newly illuminate the meaning of "the cinematic" within the expanding trends of cinema.
This symposium is being organized as part of the Pusan National University RISE (Regional Innovation System for Education) project and is designed to enhance the cultural capacity of artists, researchers, students, and citizens in the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam region through collaboration with local arts and cultural institutions.
The event will explore the meaning of "the cinematic" from various perspectives, moving beyond the limitations of the "post-cinema" discourse and examining the expanding boundaries of contemporary cinema. The symposium consists of two sessions: Part 1, "Where Does Cinema Begin?" and Part 2, "Cinema and Art."
In Part 1, Lee Jeongha, a professor at Dankook University, will discuss the uniqueness of cinematic temporal experience and the significance of image-based thought. Oh Junho, a professor at Sogang University, will introduce an experimental case of science film avant-garde screenings from 1927, highlighting educational experiments combining popular science and optical technology. Next, Kim Hoyoung, a professor at Hanyang University, will analyze cinematic devices that blur the boundaries between documentary and fiction, as well as inside and outside the frame, focusing on Jafar Panahi's film "No Bears." Kim Chaehee, a researcher at Pusan National University, will examine the ubiquity of 21st-century cinema by viewing film as an evolving "dispositif."
In Part 2, Lee Jieun, a professor at Myongji University, will shed light on major issues in contemporary art through the works of artists such as Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, and Nam June Paik, who experimented with the film medium.
Following this, Cho Sunryeong, a professor at Pusan National University, will analyze how Nam June Paik's "Line for Film" combines the visuality and performativity of video media through the mediation of the viewer's body. Lee Jinsil, a researcher at the Korea National University of Arts, will reinterpret "the cinematic" in the post-cinema era through Rosalind Krauss's concept of recursion. Son Youngsil, a professor at Kyungil University, will examine new artistic trends that have emerged as the boundaries between photography and video have weakened.
This symposium is open to everyone, with 50 seats available by pre-registration. Applications can be made via the QR code on the poster or through the Busan City integrated reservation system. On-site registration will also be available if there are remaining seats.
