Regarding the Ministry of National Defense's official proposal to North Korea to discuss the establishment of a baseline for the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), the Presidential Office stated on November 17, "This is aimed at preventing accidental clashes between the two Koreas and easing military tensions."
Kang Yoo-jung, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, told reporters that day, "A significant number of MDL markers installed at the time of the 1953 Armistice Agreement have been lost, leading to differences in perception between the two Koreas regarding the boundary in some areas," explaining the background of the proposal.
Earlier on the same day, the Ministry of National Defense issued a statement proposing talks on the Military Demarcation Line in the Demilitarized Zone. This marks the first time in seven years that the South Korean military has proposed inter-Korean military talks since the 10th general-level military talks in 2018.
