The Only City Among 16 Cities, Counties, and Districts to Receive a 'B Grade'
Among all cities, counties, and districts nationwide with more than 300,000 registered vehicles, Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province has been found to have the highest traffic safety index.
According to Pyeongtaek City on November 17, the city received a 'B grade' in the '2024 Traffic Safety Index' assessment announced by the Korea Road Traffic Authority. Pyeongtaek was the only one among the 16 cities, counties, and districts with over 300,000 registered vehicles to receive a B grade, while the other 15 local governments remained at grades C through E.
The traffic safety index is an indicator calculated annually by the Korea Road Traffic Authority based on big data from traffic accidents. The evaluation covers 18 detailed indicators across six areas: commercial vehicles, bicycles and motorcycles, pedestrians, vulnerable road users, drivers, and road environment.
In this year's assessment, Pyeongtaek scored 75.15 points, an increase of 4.68 points from the previous year, earning a B grade. This is the highest grade Pyeongtaek has received since the evaluation began in 2016.
The city explained that the most significant improvement was seen in the 'commercial vehicles' category. In 2023, Pyeongtaek received an E grade in this area, but in the latest assessment, it rose by three grades to a B.
Mayor Jung Jangsun of Pyeongtaek said, "Despite the large number of vehicles traveling to and from construction sites and industrial complexes, the high traffic safety index is a result of the mature traffic awareness of our citizens." He added, "We will continue to implement policies such as customized traffic safety education and the expansion of traffic safety facilities to create an even safer traffic environment."
