Assemblyman Kwon Chilsung of the Democratic Party of Korea criticized the People Power Party regarding the alternative legislation for the crime of breach of trust being pursued by the Democratic Party, stating, "The claim that the Democratic Party is trying to abolish the crime of breach of trust is a distortion of the facts and a deception of the public."
On November 16, Assemblyman Kwon wrote on Facebook, "The People Power Party continues its daily political attacks, claiming that abolishing the crime of breach of trust is an attempt to 'save President Lee Jaemyung.'"
He added, "Until now, I have not responded to the absurd claims of the People Power Party, but it seems they have now crossed the line. What the Democratic Party is pursuing is not a simple 'abolition of the crime of breach of trust' without any alternatives. Instead, we intend to introduce alternative legislation that clearly defines the elements of the crime by type, addressing the longstanding criticism of its ambiguous requirements." He reiterated, "It is not abolition, but alternative legislation."
Kwon further pointed out, "Currently, the crime of breach of trust serves as a universal key that allows investigative agencies to accuse most people performing duties for others of criminal offenses at their discretion. The prosecution has used it as a weapon to bring anyone to criminal court. It is a legal trap that could turn everyone into a criminal."
Assemblyman Kwon stated, "The Democratic Party is not leaving the ambiguous provisions of the crime of breach of trust as they are, but rather seeking to replace them with new regulations that have clear requirements in order to eliminate gaps in punishment and enhance legal stability. Despite this, is the People Power Party still inciting the public by claiming that the ruling Democratic Party is abolishing the crime of breach of trust?"
He continued, "In the face of incitement, no alternative or constructive dialogue is possible. The amendment to the crime of breach of trust has also been jointly submitted by the People Power Party. We want a reasonable conversation and compromise."
Regarding the alternative legislation for the crime of breach of trust, the opposition parties are strongly opposing it. On the same day, Chief Spokesperson Choi Sujin criticized in a commentary, "They should honestly admit that this is tailor-made legislation to shield the president and withdraw it."
