36,135 Victim-Related Videos Deleted
The National Office of Investigation at the National Police Agency announced on November 16 that from November last year to October this year, it conducted an intensive crackdown on cyber sexual violence, arresting 3,557 individuals and detaining 221 of them.
By type, the largest number of cases involved fake video crimes (1,553 cases, 35.2%) and child and youth sexual exploitation material crimes (1,513 cases, 34.3%). This was followed by illegal filming crimes (857 cases, 19.4%) and illegal sexual video crimes (490 cases, 11.1%).
Looking at the age distribution of suspects, teenagers accounted for the largest proportion at 47.6%, followed by those in their 20s (33.2%), 30s (12.7%), 40s (4.6%), and those aged 50 and above (1.9%). This appears to be due to the familiarity of teenagers and people in their 20s with digital media, a trend that was particularly pronounced in deepfake sex crimes.
During the crackdown period, the National Police Agency requested the Korea Communications Standards Commission to delete or block 36,135 pieces of victim-related video content and connected 28,356 cases to the Digital Sex Crime Victim Support Center.
The National Police Agency plans to continue conducting intensive crackdowns on cyber sexual violence. In particular, this crackdown will focus on detecting new types of crimes that exploit generative artificial intelligence and related technologies. The investigation system will continue to center around dedicated investigative teams at provincial and metropolitan police agencies, and undercover investigations will also be actively utilized. In addition, systems to support investigative teams, such as deepfake detection software, will continue to be enhanced.
Park Woohyun, Cyber Crime Deliberation Officer at the National Police Agency, stated, "Cyber sexual violence crimes are serious offenses that destroy the dignity of victims, so we will do our utmost to eradicate such crimes and protect victims."
