Gochang County in North Jeolla Province announced on November 14 that, as influenza (flu) cases are rising more rapidly than usual this year, it is urging residents to participate in vaccination programs and adhere to infectious disease prevention guidelines.

According to an analysis by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the proportion of influenza-like illness cases during the 43rd week of this year (October 19-25) was more than three times higher than the same period last year. In some areas, the outbreak began more than two months earlier than usual, prompting the issuance of an influenza epidemic advisory on October 17.

The Gochang County Public Health Center is actively providing free vaccinations for high-risk groups, including seniors aged 65 and older, pregnant women, and children between 6 months and 13 years old.

In addition to the national free vaccination program, the county has expanded support using its own budget. The expanded eligibility includes: ▲ residents aged 60-64 ▲ recipients of basic livelihood security ▲ people with disabilities ▲ national merit recipients and their immediate families ▲ households with multiple children under the age of 18 ▲ residents of social welfare facilities ▲ poultry farm workers. Residents aged 14 to 59 can receive vaccinations for a fee.

The health center also emphasized the importance of following basic daily preventive measures, such as hand washing, wearing masks, and ventilating indoor spaces, in addition to vaccination. It particularly stressed that vaccination is crucial for high-risk groups, as they are more likely to develop severe symptoms if infected.

Yu Byeongsu, Director of the Public Health Center, stated, "Vaccination is the most reliable way to protect not only yourself but also your family and the community," adding, "We hope all residents will actively participate so that everyone can have a healthy and safe winter."
