Visit to MaumAI
Discussing Strategies for Expanding Physical AI
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that Jemyung Ryu, Second Vice Minister, visited MaumAI on November 14 and held a meeting with representatives from the domestic physical artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
The meeting was held to assess the current state of Korea's physical AI technology and to explore the direction that the domestic physical AI sector should pursue.
Through this on-site visit and meeting, the Ministry of Science and ICT aims to understand the latest trends in technology development in the field, listen to the opinions of major physical AI companies, and seek ways to support the growth of the physical AI ecosystem.
The Ministry is promoting the establishment and expansion of physical AI as a national policy task and is building a cooperative system with related ministries such as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. In addition, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed between NVIDIA and Hyundai Motor Company to lay the foundation for the convergence of AI and industry.
At MaumAI on this day, demonstrations included an autonomous quadruped security robot that patrols spaces by recognizing human voices, as well as the 'Physical AI Data Factory,' which supports autonomous decision-making and operation of robots in a digital twin-based simulator.
Following this, Hongseop Choi, CEO of MaumAI, explained the latest global trends in physical AI and its potential impact on industries such as manufacturing. MaumAI is a company developing the Physical AI Foundation Model (VLA) and is the main operator of the Korea Physical AI Association.
During the subsequent meeting, CEO Choi, along with Kim Wook, Innovation and Global PM at IITP; Byungchan Jung, CEO of Hanwha Robotics; Wooseung Kim, CEO of Crowdworks; Youngho Seo, Executive Director at Dongwon Systems; and Youngbeom Jung, Executive Director at FuriosaAI, as well as other industry representatives and experts, discussed ways to expand domestic physical AI across various industrial sectors.
Second Vice Minister Ryu stated, "Korea has all three key elements necessary to become a global powerhouse in AI: foundation models, AI semiconductors, and strong manufacturing capabilities in both software and hardware. This gives us limitless potential for AI transformation (AX) across industries using physical AI." He added, "We will support productivity innovation and the widespread adoption of physical AI by optimizing it for the field, based on the convergence of manufacturing-including specialized physical AI for precision processes through the creation of skilled worker datasets and the establishment of dark factories."
