Yeosu's "Baekri Seomseomgil" Designated as Korea's First Official Tourism Road by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport

23 Kilometers of Six Sea Bridges Connecting Yeosu and Goheung Designated as Tourism Road

Yeosu City in South Jeolla Province announced on November 13 that the 'Baekri Seomseomgil', a 23-kilometer stretch consisting of six sea bridge sections connecting Yeosu and Goheung, has been designated as the nation's first official tourism road by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The 'tourism road' designation is a system in which the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport designates roads with beautiful scenery and attractions as tourism resources under the Road Act. Since the introduction of the system in October, this is the first time such designations have been made, with six locations nationwide, including Yeosu's Baekri Seomseomgil, being selected as tourism roads.

The Baekri Seomseomgil spans approximately 39.2 kilometers from Hwatae Bridge in Nam-myeon, Yeosu to Palyoung Bridge in Goheung, featuring a total of 11 sea bridges-including cable-stayed, suspension, arch, and girder bridges-constructed using various engineering methods. Of these, the 23-kilometer section comprising six completed sea bridges from Baekyado to Palyoung Bridge has been designated as a tourism road. The city plans to apply for additional designation of the four bridges currently under construction between Hwatae and Baekya, as well as Hwatae Bridge itself, once they are completed.

To secure the tourism road designation, Yeosu City produced drone videos and held multiple consultations with relevant agencies. This achievement was the result of collaborative efforts, including research projects by the city council and South Jeolla Province, and active support from local members of the National Assembly.

Moving forward, the city plans to expand tourism infrastructure by leveraging the majestic sea bridges and the scenic beauty of the Dadohae along the Baekri Seomseomgil, in connection with the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, aiming to establish itself as the central axis of the South Coast marine tourism belt.

Additionally, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will establish an information system for the designated tourism roads, providing a variety of details to enhance visitor convenience, such as information on cultural and rest facilities, festivals, local cuisine, and transportation accessibility.

Mayor Jung Kimyeong of Yeosu stated, "This designation as a tourism road will greatly contribute to revitalizing the local tourism industry. We will develop storytelling and tourism marketing strategies linked to nearby attractions, and strive to position Yeosu as the central city of South Coast marine tourism, ensuring the success of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo."

Meanwhile, the area surrounding the Baekri Seomseomgil is gaining attention as a premier healing route along the South Coast, offering a harmonious blend of driving, relaxation, and hands-on experiences, with tourist attractions and experiential spaces such as Jeokgeumdo Observatory Park and the Yeojaman Sunset Observatory, where visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views of the Dadohae.
