A Step Closer to Running for Yeosu Mayor in Next Year’s Local Elections
Leads Recent Broadcast Poll, Drawing Public Attention
Expected to Serve as a Bridge Between the Democratic Party’s Central Committee and Local Government
Kim Younggyu, former chairman of the Yeosu City Council, who recently edged out incumbent Mayor Chung Kimyung in a KBC Gwangju Broadcasting poll on the next Yeosu mayor, is accelerating his political activities.
It was recently revealed that he has been appointed as vice chairman of the Central Policy Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea, drawing significant attention from the local political scene and the broader political community.
Vice Chairman Kim Younggyu is a six-term member of the Yeosu City Council, the most in its history, and has served as chairman during both the 5th and the first half of the 8th council, demonstrating policy leadership at the heart of local governance.
He was awarded a first-class commendation for his dedication during the 21st presidential election. His recent appointment as vice chairman of the Policy Committee was reportedly decided based on the party leader’s recommendation and approval by the Supreme Council, in recognition of his contributions to the Democratic Party and the development of local autonomy.
Local community members have welcomed the news, saying that “a practical channel has been established to connect the central party and the government.”
Vice Chairman Kim stated, “I believe the party has entrusted me with the task of working even harder for the development of both the region and the party,” adding, “I feel a heavy sense of responsibility, and I will actively utilize the networks of the government and the central party to concretize Yeosu’s vision and turn it into national policy.”
He further emphasized, “The key to regional development lies in realistic and actionable policies. I will develop concrete policies that leverage Yeosu’s strengths in marine tourism, industry, education, and welfare, thereby revitalizing the local economy.”
Political observers have analyzed this appointment as vice chairman of the Central Policy Committee as a move by former chairman Kim Younggyu to strengthen his position on the national political stage and to begin earnest preparations for his bid for the next mayoral election in Yeosu.
In particular, his new role in the central party is seen as significantly enhancing his ability to elevate local issues to the national agenda.
A local political figure commented, “Former chairman Kim has long been deeply knowledgeable about local issues, and his strength lies in his ability to drive policy initiatives that connect the central and local governments. His appointment as vice chairman of the Policy Committee could be a major opportunity for Yeosu’s development.”
Vice Chairman Kim reiterated his commitment, stating, “I will be a politician who advances together with the citizens for the change and development of Yeosu,” and “Through cooperation among the party, government, and local community, I will help Yeosu grow into the central city of Korea’s southern coast.”
