It was belatedly revealed that a baby of a Japanese couple was left in critical condition after a taxi driven by a man in his 70s crossed the centerline and collided with an oncoming car in Seoul.
According to the police on November 11, Yongsan Police Station is investigating a taxi driver in his 70s, identified as Mr. A, on suspicion of causing injury by violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents, after he crossed the centerline due to pedal misoperation and caused a traffic accident.
Mr. A is suspected of causing a collision with a passenger car traveling in the opposite direction after crossing the centerline on a road in Yongsan District at around 7 p.m. on October 21.
As a result of the accident, a Japanese couple in their 20s who were passengers in the taxi suffered fractures. Their 9-month-old daughter was reportedly transported to the hospital unconscious and is currently receiving treatment.
Mr. A initially claimed that the vehicle had suddenly accelerated, but during the police investigation, he reportedly admitted to mistakenly pressing the wrong pedal. No evidence of drug or alcohol use was found in relation to Mr. A.
The police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and are considering whether to request an arrest warrant.
