Seogu Gieokhaeondan is a dementia specialist volunteer group formed in May of last year, consisting of 60 residents from dementia-safe villages (Sangmu 2-dong, Pungam-dong, and Kumho 1-dong). The group leads efforts to create a dementia-friendly environment through dementia prevention activities, raising awareness, and identifying high-risk groups.

In particular, the members are divided into teams of five and regularly visit senior centers and dementia-safe parks, running programs that utilize dementia prevention exercises and educational tools to systematically manage the cognitive health of the elderly.

They have also enhanced their expertise by completing the Level 1 Cognitive and Emotional Support Specialist course and training to strengthen their professional skills.

During the meeting, participants shared their achievements through video presentations and reports, and a special lecture was given by Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seo-gu. Under the theme “I Am Happy Because You Are Here,” Mayor Kim reflected with the members on the meaning of volunteering and engaged in a discussion about the values of community.

In the subsequent discussion session, participants explored future directions, including expanding the scope of activities and roles, diversifying dementia prevention content, and strengthening the capabilities of group members.

Mayor Kim Ikang stated, “The dedication of Seogu Gieokhaeondan is a great force in creating a warm community free from the fear of dementia,” and added, “We will continue to actively support the creation of a dementia-friendly environment in which residents can participate and empathize together.”

Meanwhile, in September, Seogu Gieokhaeondan received a commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare at the ‘Dementia Overcoming Day Commemoration Ceremony’ in recognition of its contribution to building a dementia-friendly community.
