Police Receive 541 Reports of Missing Koreans in Cambodia... Ongoing Safety Verification

On November 10, the police announced that, as of November 5, a total of 541 reports of missing South Koreans in Cambodia had been received.

At a regular press briefing that day, a representative from the National Police Agency stated, "There are 247 cases where individuals have not returned to Korea and 167 cases where their safety has not been confirmed. We are continuously checking on these cases." The representative also added, "Since October 25, the number of daily reports has decreased to about one per day."


In connection with the situation in Cambodia, the police are investigating 119 cases involving investment advisory chat rooms and romance scams. By regional police agency, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency is handling 33 cases, Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency 14 cases, Busan Metropolitan Police Agency 11 cases, and Chungnam Provincial Police Agency 9 cases. Regarding investigations in countries neighboring Cambodia, there are 14 cases in the Philippines, 9 in China, 7 in Thailand, 6 in Vietnam, and 3 in Laos currently underway.


Regarding preparations for the 2026 College Scholastic Ability Test, the police stated, "In coordination with the Ministry of Education, we plan to deploy 9,210 personnel," and added, "In the event of bomb threats, we are establishing countermeasures with relevant agencies."


Concerning the case in which a civic group filed a complaint against Kim Hyunji, Secretary to the President for Administrative Affairs, on charges including abuse of authority, coercion, obstruction of work, embezzlement, and breach of trust in the course of duty, the police said, "The Yongsan Police Station in Seoul is currently conducting an investigation in accordance with procedures, including questioning the complainant."

Regarding the case in which Choi Minhee, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, was accused of violating the Kim Youngran Act, the police stated, "A total of five complaints have been filed," and added, "The Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul is conducting the investigation."


With respect to allegations of preferential treatment in the appointment of Yoo Dam, daughter of former lawmaker Yoo Seungmin, as a professor at Incheon National University, the police said, "A complaint was received on November 4, and the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Investigation Unit of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency is currently reviewing the complaint."


Regarding the investigation into suspicions that Kim Byungki, floor leader of the Democratic Party, used his position as a member of the National Assembly to facilitate his son's university transfer, the police stated, "The Dongjak Police Station in Seoul is investigating the necessary details."


Regarding allegations that Lee Junseok, leader of the Reform Party, made sexually inappropriate remarks during a presidential election TV debate and received proxy payments for public opinion poll expenses, the police said, "We are conducting interviews with those involved and analyzing relevant materials."
