The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on November 7 that the National Gangwon Specialized Science Museum would hold its opening ceremony at 2:00 p.m. that day and officially begin operations.
The National Gangwon Specialized Science Museum was constructed on the site of the Taejang-dong Culture and Sports Park in Wonju (land area: 24,000 square meters; total floor area: 7,005 square meters), with a total project cost of 39.6 billion won (23.7 billion won from the national government and 15.9 billion won from local governments).
The museum was designed based on the biohealth and advanced medical device industries being fostered by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and Wonju City.
Through permanent exhibitions such as the "Bio Code Exhibition Hall," themed on "The Science Inside Our Bodies," and the "Medical Code Exhibition Hall," which explores the principles of modern medicine, visitors can experience the science of the human body and diseases. There is also a special exhibition hall introducing the history and research achievements of the local medical industry, with a total of more than 80 exhibits on display.
The museum operates inquiry-based science education programs for future generations and hands-on activities in collaboration with local schools. Science culture events for all generations and citizen participation programs will also be gradually expanded.
From November 4 to November 30, prior to the official opening, admission will be free.
A representative from the Ministry of Science and ICT stated, "In an era where scientific capital is becoming increasingly important, we hope the Gangwon Specialized Science Museum becomes a driving force for regional innovation. We will continue to support exhibitions and educational programs so that the museum becomes a place people want to visit again."
