Mayor Park Ilha of Dongjak District: "Fostering Heukseok High School as a Prestigious Institution"... Promoting Competitiveness Enhancement Measures

Scheduled to Open in March Next Year, District Actively Advocates for Class Expansion
Admissions Support and Placement of Outstanding Teachers in Progress

Dongjak District in Seoul (Mayor Park Ilha) has launched full-scale efforts to ensure the early stabilization of the tentatively named Heukseok High School, which is scheduled to open in March next year, by expanding the number of classes and securing outstanding teachers.

Last month on the 16th, the district held a meeting with the Dongjak-Gwanak Office of Education and proposed several measures to strengthen Heukseok High School’s educational competitiveness: ▲expansion of classes and student quota, ▲early appointment of the principal within November, and ▲priority placement of excellent teachers.

According to the district, Education Director Kang Sunwon expressed agreement with these proposals and stated that he would actively recommend them to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. He also emphasized the need for the principal to directly lead information sessions and consultations for parents of nearby middle schools to enhance the school’s credibility and application rate.

On the 23rd of last month, the district visited the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education to officially convey the demands of parents in Heukseok-dong and the district’s opinions. This month, the district plans to hold meetings with education office officials to strengthen the cooperative system and actively advocate for the necessity of expanding classes.

Dongjak District is also implementing support measures for teachers tailored to the characteristics of the new school. By providing administrative support staff, the district aims to reduce teachers’ workload, and is pursuing a plan to appoint skilled teachers as specialist instructors at the Dongjak Admissions Support Center, offering them incentives.

Additionally, to foster Heukseok High School as a prestigious local institution, the district plans to run major-specific special lectures and career programs in collaboration with nearby universities such as Seoul National University, Chung-Ang University, Soongsil University, and Chongshin University. In line with the implementation of the high school credit system, the district will also systematically support students’ career exploration and management of their school records.

The district also plans to establish the Heukseok 9 District Admissions Support Center to provide year-round admissions counseling and consulting, and is considering adjustments to village bus routes to facilitate commuting for students from Sangdo-dong and Sadang-dong. Currently, the naming process for Heukseok High School is underway, and the new school building is 78% complete, with construction expected to be finished by January next year.

Mayor Park Ilha of Dongjak District stated, “We are doing our utmost to ensure that Heukseok High School becomes a key institution for nurturing future talent,” and added, “We will work closely with the Office of Education to expand classes, secure outstanding teachers, and ensure a stable opening.”
