The National May 18th Cemetery Management Office announced on November 5 that it has selected the late Mo Gihoon as the May 18 Democratic Meritorious Person of the Month for November, in order to highlight the noble sacrifices and contributions of those honored for the May 18 Democratic Movement and to promote the values of the movement both domestically and internationally.
The late Mo Gihoon, a recipient of the May 18 Democratic Merit, was born on November 7, 1961. From the age of twenty, he helped with deliveries at his sister's ice shop. When the democratization movement broke out in 1980, he distributed leftover cotton gloves from the shop to protesters and went missing on May 20. In March 1981, he returned home from the Armed Forces General Hospital with the help of a police officer, but suffered from pain in his ribs and brain as aftereffects of the incident and passed away in 1991.
An official from the National May 18th Cemetery Management Office stated, "The late Mo Gihoon rests in Section 3, Plot 71 of the First Cemetery, and visitors are welcome to pay their respects at any time. As an open national cemetery, we will continue our efforts to honor and remember those who sacrificed for democracy."
