Individual Manuscript Feedback Sessions with Professional Writers Also Offered
The Department of Creative Writing at Gwangju University announced on November 5 that it recently held the "Gwangju Citizen Web Novel Specialization Course" in collaboration with local youth and young adults.
This specialized program, organized as part of the RISE (Regional Innovation-centered University Support System) initiative aimed at fostering joint growth between the region and the university, marks a significant step toward cultivating local talent to establish Gwangju as a leading city in web novels. The course is held every Wednesday for a total of six sessions. Youth participants who attend at least four sessions receive a "Web Novel Specialization Course Certificate," and before and after each lecture, there are events where participants receive individual manuscript feedback from professional writers.
The first lecture, which began on October 29, was led by writer Jeong Muni, who is currently active on KakaoPage and Naver Series and has published numerous works including "Making a Living by Writing Web Novels" and "The Evil Deeds of the Terminally Ill Empress."
The lecture covered practical topics such as "The Sales and Distribution Process of Web Novels," "Writers’ Income Structure," and "Important Points in Writing." During the subsequent Q&A session, participants asked a wide range of questions.
Jeong Muni advised, "Web novels are written more for the public than for oneself, and commercial appeal and dopamine are key. The essence of a web novel is its text," adding, "Writers should focus on how to creatively adapt popular clich?s. No matter how excellent the style and setting, it is difficult to succeed without the dopamine that draws readers in."
An Jeomok, head of the Department of Creative Writing, commented, "Seeing the participating youth and citizens ask realistic questions about overcoming slumps and writers’ routines-questions that any creator would naturally have-made me reflect on the significance and renewed determination of expanding campus opportunities beyond the university."
