LS Electric Obtains UL Certification for Power Conversion System in U.S., Accelerates Expansion into North American ESS Market

Water-Cooled Technology Targets North American ESS Market
Over 300 UL Certifications Secured for Power Equipment
Enhanced Battery Performance, Reduced Equipment Footprint

LS Electric has obtained UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification for its latest PCS (Power Conversion System), a core component of energy storage systems (ESS). This means the company has completed the essential certification process required for exports to the United States.

LS Electric announced on November 5 that it held a certificate awarding ceremony for the 'UL 1741' certification at the Anyang Global Research and Development (R&D) Campus in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province the previous day. The event was attended by key figures, including Jangcheol Seo, Head of Power R&D Division and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LS Electric, and Wesley Kwok, Executive Vice President of Renewable Energy and Industrial Automation (EIA) at UL Solutions.

The certified product is the second-generation PCS of the 'MSSP (Modular Scalable String Platform)', which LS Electric developed to target the global industrial ESS market. This product modularizes the 'PEBB (Power Electronics Building Block)' and allows for parallel connections. Notably, it features a water-cooling structure, enabling stable cooling even in high-output environments. When applying the water-cooled MSSP, both the battery and PCS can be cooled simultaneously, making temperature control easier. As a result, battery performance is improved and the overall equipment size can be reduced, which has recently attracted significant attention in the U.S. market.

UL is a U.S.-based nonprofit testing organization that evaluates electrical safety and fire hazards to test and certify product safety. Obtaining UL certification is mandatory for selling electrical products in the United States. Among these, UL 1741 certification applies to power conversion systems and inverters used in distributed power generation systems.

During this certification process, LS Electric passed all 52 test items, including overload and short-circuit safety tests, uninterruptible operation tests, and standalone operation tests, in order to simultaneously meet the differing regulatory and certification requirements of regions such as California, Hawaii, and Canada.

LS Electric plans to accelerate its efforts to expand into the North American ESS market following this UL certification for its PCS for ESS. As the North American ESS market is rapidly growing due to the expansion of renewable energy and increasing demand for grid stabilization, the company aims to continue the upward trend in ESS project orders, which has been rising since the second half of the year, in the North American market as well.

Meanwhile, LS Electric began obtaining UL certifications in 2014 to actively enter the North American market and has since acquired around 300 UL certifications to date.

By product, the company has built a UL-certified portfolio that covers the entire range of power distribution, including ACB (Air Circuit Breaker), MCCB (Molded Case Circuit Breaker), VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breaker), MC (Magnetic Contactor), MT (Motor Protection Circuit Breaker), MMS (Molded Case Motor Starter), EMPR (Electronic Motor Protection Relay), SPD (Surge Protective Device), DC-Fuse (Direct Current Fuse), DC-Relay (Direct Current Relay), MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker), SWGR (Switchgear), and VC (Vacuum Contactor).

An LS Electric representative stated, "UL certification is a prerequisite for entering the North American market and provides a foundation for offering safe and efficient energy solutions to global customers. Based on local certifications, LS Electric plans to expand its range of customized solutions, targeting a diverse customer base from large-scale power plant ESS to commercial and industrial ESS."
