Kim Younghwan, Governor of North Chungcheong Province, who was reported to authorities on suspicion of perjury during the National Assembly investigation into the Osong underpass disaster, appeared for police questioning on November 4.
The Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul summoned Governor Kim as a suspect at 2 p.m. on this day to investigate allegations of violating the Act on Testimony and Appraisal before the National Assembly.
Upon arriving at the Yeongdeungpo Police Station, Governor Kim stated, "I will undergo the investigation confidently, truthfully, and with sincerity."
During the institutional report for the National Assembly investigation into the Osong disaster held in September, Governor Kim testified that he monitored the underpass via CCTV on the day of the disaster and made more than 10 phone calls to check on the disaster situation.
In September, the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee, led by the ruling party, adopted the final report on the Osong disaster investigation and simultaneously approved the motion to report Governor Kim for perjury.
The Act on Testimony and Appraisal before the National Assembly stipulates that a witness who gives false testimony before the National Assembly shall be sentenced to imprisonment for not less than one year and not more than ten years.
