It was belatedly reported that Kim Younghoon, a Korean citizen known as the person with the highest IQ (intelligence quotient) in the world, announced that he is applying for asylum in the United States. On October 30, Kim posted a 1 minute and 35 second video on his social networking service (SNS), stating, "As a Christian and the holder of the world’s highest IQ record, I am applying for asylum in the United States."

Kim said, "I can no longer remain in South Korea, which is ruled by a pro-North leftist government that suppresses biblical truth and betrays the freedom our ancestors fought to protect," adding, "Today, the South Korean government punishes patriots and praises communists." He continued, "Truth has become a crime, and faith has become a target," and declared, "I will not yield to evil. I seek refuge in the United States, where faith is not persecuted but protected."
In another post, he claimed, "South Korea no longer exists. Only North Korea remains, because the South Korean government has become a pro-North regime," and asserted, "I am the first Korean to apply for asylum to the Trump administration on the grounds of political and religious persecution."
Kim is currently reported to be enrolled in a Master of Theology program at a U.S. seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). The 'religious persecution' he mentioned is presumed to refer to the case of Pastor Son Hyunbo of Saegero Church in Busan, who was indicted and detained in September on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act and the Local Education Autonomy Act. Pastor Son is accused of conducting illegal electioneering by expressing support for a specific candidate to his congregation during prayer meetings and Sunday services at Saegero Church in May of this year, ahead of the presidential election.

According to the Korea Record Institute, Kim achieved a perfect score (160 points) on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale in December 2018 and a perfect score (204 points) on the Wechsler Standard Deviation High Intelligence Test in February 2022. He is known as the only Korean member of the Mega Society, an ultra-high IQ organization that only admits people with the highest intelligence in the world. He is also listed as the world's number one IQ holder in the World Genius Directory and the Giga Society.
In January of this year, ahead of the German general election, he expressed support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, following Tesla CEO Elon Musk. However, after local media raised suspicions about the authenticity of his IQ, he refuted the allegations but eventually withdrew his support for the AfD. At the time, he stated, "I declared my support for the AfD out of pure admiration for Musk, but I feel I was temporarily used for illegal political purposes," adding, "I will not intervene in German elections in the future."
