Park Honggeun Criticizes Jeong Cheongrae's Response to Suspension of Trials Act: "As the Ruling Party, We Must Not Repeat Communication Breakdowns with the Presidential Office"

Concerns Over Gyeongju APEC Achievements Being Wasted on Political Strife
Leadership Urged to Communicate Closely With the Office of the President
Emphasizes, "The Constitution and the People Are on Our Side"

Park Honggeun, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, offered sharp criticism regarding the confusion between the Office of the President and the party over the Suspension of Trials Act. Although he did not mention Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheongrae by name, he pointed out a series of missteps and urged the party leadership to communicate with the presidential office.

On November 3, Park expressed his views on the controversy surrounding the Suspension of Trials Act through social media. Referring to the Office of the President, which expressed opposition to the enactment of the act, he said, "The national energy generated by the very successful Gyeongju APEC summit could have been wasted on unnecessary political strife, but it appears to have been resolved early on." He added, "Regardless of whether it was called the ‘National Stability Act’ or the ‘Suspension of Trials Act,’ as the party moved quickly to push for legislation, the public was bound to feel that the timing was off and that it was excessive."

Regarding the party leadership, which hinted at the possibility of passing the Suspension of Trials Act in the plenary session and referred to it as a national stabilization law, Park said, "Of course, I understand the concerns that we must be prepared for any contingency, since we cannot trust the judiciary, which has completely lost the public's trust, nor the People Power Party, which continues to defend Yoon Sukyeol, the ringleader of the rebellion." However, he emphasized, "The Constitution and the people of the Republic of Korea, who have boldly withstood even pro-coup attempts, are on our side."

He expressed regret over the judiciary's response during the National Assembly audit, where the possibility of resuming trials was not ruled out, and pointed out that the party's response was also problematic.

He stated, "Especially since we are the ruling party with unlimited responsibility for state affairs, we must not allow communication breakdowns with the Office of the President to be repeated. On critical issues that impact the political landscape, the leadership should not leave matters to individual lawmakers’ early assertions. Instead, the leadership must clearly establish a channel and communicate with the presidential office both in advance and on a regular basis, more closely and precisely, so that President Lee Jaemyung’s administration can be less burdened and achieve greater results. I hope the party demonstrates such wisdom."
