Diversifying Cloud Infrastructure
OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has signed a cloud computing contract with Amazon worth $38 billion (approximately 54 trillion won). This move is interpreted as a strategy to reduce its reliance on Microsoft (MS) and diversify its cloud infrastructure.
On November 3 (local time), Amazon announced that it had entered into a multi-year strategic partnership with OpenAI.
Under this agreement, OpenAI will be able to immediately utilize Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers, leveraging hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs). In addition, AWS plans to build additional dedicated infrastructure specifically for OpenAI in the future.
This will enable OpenAI to rapidly scale up the cloud computing capacity required to operate ChatGPT.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasized, "Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable computing power," adding, "Our partnership with AWS will strengthen a broad computing ecosystem to lead the next generation of AI and provide advanced AI to everyone."
This contract marks OpenAI's first collaboration with a leading company in the cloud infrastructure sector. It signals that OpenAI is moving away from an exclusive arrangement centered on Microsoft and is pursuing diversification of its cloud infrastructure.
Previously, OpenAI had signed an exclusive cloud contract with Microsoft, but Microsoft's right of first negotiation for OpenAI's computing resources recently expired. As a result, OpenAI is now able to collaborate with other providers, including AWS.
