The police have requested an arrest warrant for a driver who hit a Japanese mother and daughter touring central Seoul with a car, resulting in two casualties.
On November 3, the Seoul Hyehwa Police Station announced that it had applied for an arrest warrant for a man in his 30s, identified as A, on charges of drunk driving and causing death or injury by dangerous driving under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
A is accused of driving under the influence and striking the mother and daughter as they were walking across a crosswalk at the Heunginjimun intersection in Jongno-gu, Seoul, at around 10 p.m. on November 2. According to the police investigation, A drank about three bottles of soju at a restaurant in Jongno 5-ga, drove his own electric vehicle for approximately one kilometer, and then caused the accident.
A has admitted to all charges, and the vehicle involved in the accident has been seized.
The Japanese mother and daughter had entered Korea on the morning of November 2 and were scheduled to depart on the afternoon of November 4. It was reported that they had finished shopping at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and were on their way to Naksan Fortress Trail when the accident occurred. As a result of the accident, the mother, who was in her 50s, died, and her daughter, in her 30s, suffered a rib fracture and other injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
If the prosecution files for an arrest warrant for A, a pretrial detention hearing is expected to be held as early as the afternoon of November 4 at the Seoul Central District Court.
