Transporting the Victim's Body to Japan Costs 15 Million Won
A Japanese mother and daughter were struck by a drunk driver while sightseeing in central Seoul.
On November 3, the Seoul Hyehwa Police Station announced that a man in his 30s, identified as A, had been booked on charges of drunk driving and causing death or injury by dangerous driving under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. The police plan to request an arrest warrant for A later in the day.
A is accused of hitting the mother and daughter while driving under the influence at around 10 p.m. on November 2, as they were crossing the pedestrian crosswalk at Heunginjimun Intersection in Jongno District, Seoul. According to the police investigation, A drank about three bottles of soju at a restaurant in Jongno 5-ga, then drove his own electric vehicle for approximately one kilometer before causing the accident.
A has admitted to all charges, and the vehicle involved in the accident has been seized.
The Japanese mother and daughter had arrived in Korea on the morning of the incident and were scheduled to depart on November 4. As a result of the accident, the mother, who was in her 50s, died, while her daughter, in her 30s, suffered injuries including a rib fracture and is receiving medical treatment.
A police official stated, "An employee from the Japanese Embassy is scheduled to visit the hospital to discuss funeral arrangements. The victim's family will arrive tomorrow, and although the victim wishes to have the body transported to Japan, they are concerned about the cost of 15 million won."
