'AI Firefighters' to Be Deployed in Busan's Traditional Markets

Busan Launches 'AI Safety Monitoring' System in Traditional Markets

'AI firefighters' will be deployed in Busan's traditional markets.

The Busan Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Hyungjoon) announced on November 3 that it will officially launch the 'AI-based Traditional Market Safety Monitoring System' in November to strengthen safety in traditional markets that are vulnerable to fires.

This system will be installed in approximately 500 stores across seven traditional markets in Busan (Bansongkeun Market, Jaesong Market, Jaesong Hanmaeum Market, Choryang Traditional Market, Sujeong Traditional Market, Jangnim Alley Market, and Hadan Oil Permanent Market). The core of the system is to install throwable fire extinguishers equipped with AI functions, as well as gas and temperature-humidity sensors, to enable real-time detection, monitoring, and response to fire risks.

Going beyond simple mobile phone alerts, the system features an automatic notification system that instantly connects to the 119 emergency center through a 24-hour control center. This enables rapid prevention of large-scale fires and casualties that could occur at small business sites.

This project has been carried out by Busan Technopark since March, with seven traditional markets in Busan selected as test sites, and the system installation has been completed.

Prior to the full-scale operation of the system, the city will hold an opening ceremony for the 'AI-based Traditional Market Safety Monitoring System' at 2 p.m. on November 3 at the entrance plaza of Hadan Oil Permanent Market.

About 100 people, including Mayor Park Hyungjoon, National Assembly member Lee Sungkwon, city and district council members, and representatives from traditional market merchant associations, will attend the opening ceremony. The event will include an introduction to the system's operating principles, a demonstration of an actual fire scenario, and a fire suppression experience program.

The city expects that with the introduction of this system, traditional markets will be reborn as safe economic spaces for daily life, enhanced by AI technology.

Even during late-night hours or holidays-periods that are typically blind spots for management-AI will monitor risks in real time, enabling early response and allowing merchants to focus on their business with greater peace of mind.

Mayor Park Hyungjoon stated, "With the addition of AI technology innovation, traditional markets will become safer, more trusted, and more attractive to citizens. We will actively introduce digital innovation to traditional markets to revitalize the local economy and create safer marketplaces."
