Three Consecutive Years of Recognition
724 Tons of Waste Appliances Collected Free of Charge Annually
Gwanak-gu in Seoul (Mayor Park Junhee) was selected as an excellent local government for the third consecutive year, receiving the Bronze Minister's Award from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment at the 2025 Excellent Local Governments Competition for Free Home Collection Service of Waste Home Appliances. The competition, hosted by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and organized by Lee Soonhwan Governance, evaluated the waste appliance collection performance and operational achievements of 226 local governments nationwide.

Gwanak-gu received high marks for establishing and operating the largest collection center in the southwestern region of Seoul, as well as for implementing an efficient system to promote recycling, including a classification system by appliance type and a comprehensive collection network for small waste appliances.
In particular, during the evaluation period from August 2024 to July 2025, approximately 724 tons of waste appliances were collected free of charge. To enhance resident convenience, the district installed collection bins for small and medium-sized waste appliances in 21 neighborhoods and provided real-time information on their locations through the “Our Neighborhood Geographic Information System (GIS).” Additionally, Gwanak-gu actively promoted the free home collection service using electronic billboards in front of the district office and near Seoul National University Station.
Furthermore, the district has established a culture of resident participation in waste separation by expanding smart recycling bins, distributing dedicated waste bags, recycling coffee grounds, and introducing a transparent PET bottle reward system. As a result, Gwanak-gu also received the top award in Seoul's recycling performance evaluation.
Mayor Park Junhee stated, “Winning this award for three consecutive years is thanks to the residents who have joined us in creating a ‘Clean Living Gwanak.’ We will continue to expand our systems so that residents can recycle resources even more conveniently and build a sustainable resource-circulating city.”
