Mayor Choi Woncheol of Gongju Wins 'Chungnam Disability Welfare Achievement Award'

Choi Woncheol, Mayor of Gongju City in South Chungcheong Province, has set an example of inclusive welfare policy and was awarded the '2025 Proud Chungnam Disability Welfare Achievement Award.'

This achievement award, presented at the 'Chungnam Day for People with Physical Disabilities' ceremony held at Nonsan Citizens' Sports Complex on October 31, is given to local government heads who have made outstanding contributions to improving welfare and human rights for people with disabilities.

According to the city on November 3, since Mayor Choi took office, Gongju City has focused on establishing practical welfare infrastructure by expanding care service infrastructure for people with disabilities, increasing job creation for vulnerable employment groups, strengthening medical and livelihood support for people with severe disabilities, and increasing support for welfare facilities and organizations for people with disabilities.

In particular, Mayor Choi personally oversaw the medical expense support project for people with kidney disabilities, emphasizing 'field-oriented welfare administration.' He also established a customized welfare system for those in care blind spots, such as people with developmental disabilities, leading to tangible changes.

Furthermore, the city has actively allocated budgets to improve the working conditions of welfare facility workers and to help disability organizations build a foundation for self-reliance. The administration is also recognized for embodying the philosophy that 'welfare is a right, not a charity' throughout its policies.

Mayor Choi stated, "This award is an achievement created by all the citizens of Gongju together, and it is the result of an administration that cares for the socially disadvantaged," adding, "We will continue to pursue meticulous and consistent welfare policies to improve the quality of life and protect the rights of people with disabilities."

Meanwhile, the 'Chungnam Disability Welfare Achievement Award' is an annual award presented by South Chungcheong Province to individuals or organizations that have contributed to promoting welfare for people with disabilities and expanding their social participation. This year, Gongju City was recognized as a leading city for inclusive welfare.
