The Hot Water Bottle She Used Often Suddenly Exploded... What Happened to the Burned UK Woman?

Hot Water Bottle Lifespan: 2 Years
"Check the Manufacturing Date"

A hot water bottle in use in the United Kingdom exploded, causing a woman to suffer severe burns on her lower body. The accident is believed to have been caused by the weakened durability of the hot water bottle, which had been used for six years. The recommended usage period for a hot water bottle is two years; using it beyond this period can weaken the material, potentially leading to explosions or cracks.

Recently, the Daily Mail in the UK reported that "Savannah Baker, 27, from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, suffered an explosion accident last month while using a hot water bottle to relieve menstrual cramps."

Baker filled the hot water bottle, which she had used for about six years, with water that was half-boiled as she usually did, released the air, and sealed it. She said, "I was suffering from severe menstrual pain, so I placed the bottle between my pants and skin while working in the kitchen," and added, "After three to four minutes, as I bent down to pick up my cat’s food bowl, the lower left part of the bottle burst."

Baker, who instantly suffered burns to her lower body, immediately took a cold shower to administer first aid. She said, "The pain was extremely severe," and "It felt like my skin was burning, and later I saw the flesh peeling off."

She was then helped by emergency responders, who wrapped her legs in plastic wrap to prevent infection before transporting her to a nearby hospital.

The medical staff diagnosed that "skin grafts may be necessary," but fortunately, her wounds healed quickly and surgery is no longer required.

Baker said, "Twenty-five percent of my lower body was burned," and "I was told I might have permanent scars."

The main cause of the accident was identified as using a hot water bottle beyond its recommended lifespan. According to the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, the typical lifespan of a hot water bottle is about two years. After that, the rubber material gradually weakens due to repeated heat and use, increasing the risk of bursting or cracking.

To use a hot water bottle safely, it is important to check the manufacturing date and replace it immediately if the material becomes hard or cracks appear. It is also recommended to use water at about 50-55°C rather than boiling water.

After the accident, Baker posted a warning video on TikTok. She informed other users about the lifespan and precautions for hot water bottles. She also shared photos of her second-degree burns on her legs and abdomen, stating, "I hope that through my experience, others will not have to go through the same pain."
