"I Set the Wedding Date After Finishing the Exams I Was Preparing For"

The daughter of Choi Minhee, Chairperson of the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Committee and a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, recently addressed the controversy surrounding her wedding through social media.

Choi Minhee's Daughter Explains on Social Media: "I Swear I Did Not Have Two Wedding Ceremonies" Choi Minhee, Chairperson of the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Committee, is presiding over the national audit on the Korea Broadcasting System (KBS), Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), and the Korea Broadcast Culture Promotion Foundation, the major shareholder, at the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Committee held in Yeouido, Seoul on the 23rd.

On October 30, Ms. A, Chairperson Choi's daughter, posted on her social media, "I swear to the heavens, I did not have two wedding ceremonies," and explained, "I did not intentionally schedule my wedding during the national audit period; I set the wedding date after the second round of exams I was preparing for." This was in response to claims made by Assemblyman Joo Jinwoo of the People Power Party and others, who pointed to her social media profile stating "Married since August 14, 2024," and argued, "The wedding during the national audit period was essentially a cash-collecting ceremony." Her explanation indicates that she registered her marriage last year and held the wedding ceremony only once this month.

Ms. A wrote, "I never expected my private life to become such a controversy during the national audit," and added, "I tried to endure everything, and while I can handle other criticisms, it pains me that things that are not true are being spread as if they are facts." She emphasized that she wrote this explanation without consulting her mother or the assembly office.

Regarding suspicions that her previous employment at the National Assembly was a form of preferential hiring, she refuted, "I joined as a regular employee after seeing the recruitment notice on the National Assembly member's office hiring website," and added, "There are records of my application, acceptance, and all related details."

Ms. A emphasized, "Like my peers, I have wandered, searched for a career path, faced setbacks in job hunting and exams, and even postponed marriage because of these challenges. All of these were my own choices and decisions, unrelated to my mother." She added, "Ever since I was young, I have been a stubborn child who does not discuss my affairs with my parents."

She also expressed, "I feel deeply sorry to my mother for causing her such distress due to decisions I made without fully considering her social position," and pleaded, "My heart is burning. Please stop reporting things that are not true."

Previously, Chairperson Choi faced criticism when it became known that her daughter held a wedding at Sarangjae in the National Assembly on October 18, during the national audit period. Chairperson Choi was also caught by the media sending a Telegram message to her staff during a plenary session, listing the names and amounts of congratulatory money received from officials of audited agencies. Chairperson Choi's office explained, "She instructed her staff to return the congratulatory money," but the People Power Party filed a police report against her that day, accusing her of bribery.
