KOSPI Closes Above 4,080, Sets New All-Time High

The KOSPI has once again set a new all-time high. JP Morgan has forecasted the era of KOSPI 6000.


On the 29th, the KOSPI index closed at 4,081.15, up 1.76% from the previous trading day.


The KOSPI index opened higher at 4,061.54 and fluctuated throughout the session. In the afternoon, as U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned cooperation between South Korea and the United States in the shipbuilding industry during his opening remarks at the Korea-U.S. summit held at the Gyeongju National Museum, buying momentum strengthened, pushing the index to close at a record high.

Most of the top market capitalization stocks ended in positive territory. Samsung Electronics (up 1.01%), Hyundai Motor (up 2.99%), Kia (up 1.67%), LG Energy Solution (up 0.78%), Doosan Enerbility (up 11.57%), and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (up 0.17%) all rose.


In particular, SK Hynix surged by 7.10% after announcing record-breaking third-quarter results. Its operating profit in the third quarter reached 1.14 trillion won, surpassing 1 trillion won for the first time since the company's founding. During the session, the stock price climbed to 559,000 won, setting a new all-time high, and its market capitalization exceeded 400 trillion won.


Meanwhile, Samsung Biologics (down 0.89%) and Hanwha Aerospace (down 0.3%) declined.


Expectations from global investment banks that the KOSPI could reach 5,000 also boosted investor sentiment. JP Morgan, in its report "KOSPI 5000 on the Cards; Any Pullback Here Opportunity to Add," raised its KOSPI target to 5,000 and analyzed that, under a bullish scenario, it could even rise to 6,000.


JP Morgan explained, "Despite the recent rally, the KOSPI's price-to-earnings ratio (PER) and price-to-book ratio (PBR) are 13.2 times and 1.34 times, respectively, which are lower than the Asian averages of 16.1 times and 2.15 times." The firm added, "If the market enters a correction phase, we recommend buying, and Korea remains the most favored market in the region."


The KOSDAQ closed at 901.59, down 0.19% from the previous day. Although the KOSDAQ index saw a slight decline, it has maintained the 900 level on a closing basis since the 27th.


In the KOSDAQ market, institutional investors recorded a net selling of 62.5 billion won. Individual investors and foreigners posted net purchases of 64.5 billion won and 36.9 billion won, respectively.


The top three KOSDAQ market capitalization stocks all ended lower. Alteogen fell by 2%, while Ecopro BM and Ecopro dropped by 1.38% and 4.22%, respectively. On the other hand, Peptron and Leeno Industrial each rose by 1.92%.


The won/dollar exchange rate ended at 1,431.7 won, down 6 won from the previous trading day.
