Prosecutors Seek 30-Year Prison Sentence for Chinese Man in 'Garibong-dong Cohabitant Murder' Case

A Chinese national man has been sentenced to a heavy prison term after killing a woman he was living with at his residence in Garibong-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul.

Prosecutors Seek 30-Year Prison Sentence for Chinese Man in 'Garibong-dong Cohabitant Murder' Case

On October 29, during the final hearing at the 14th Criminal Division of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Jeonghee), prosecutors requested a 30-year prison sentence for Mr. Kim (62), who was indicted on charges of murder. In addition, they requested a 10-year electronic monitoring order and five years of probation.

On this day, Mr. Kim's attorney stated, "The victim first appeared to be in a position to stab with a knife, so the defendant acted in self-defense, and in the process, he became agitated and committed the crime. The defendant deeply regrets his wrongdoing and, as he is a terminal liver cancer patient in poor health, we ask for leniency in sentencing."

Mr. Kim also pleaded in his final statement, "I think about this incident every day in the detention center and deeply regret it. If I could go back in time, I would never have committed such an act."

Mr. Kim is accused of killing a woman in her 50s with a weapon at his residence in Garibong-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul at around 3:17 a.m. on July 31 this year. It was confirmed that the crime occurred during an argument with the victim. The woman was taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest but ultimately died.

The sentencing for Mr. Kim is scheduled to take place at 10:10 a.m. on November 19.
