According to CNBC, a U.S. economic media outlet, on the 28th (local time), online payment company PayPal has partnered with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, to integrate its digital wallet into ChatGPT.


The agreement between the two companies was signed over the past weekend, and starting in 2026, PayPal users and sellers will be able to buy and sell products on ChatGPT. Alex Chriss, CEO of PayPal, explained that PayPal users will be able to purchase products through ChatGPT, and sellers will be able to list and sell their products on ChatGPT. He added, "This is a completely new shopping paradigm," and predicted that agentic AI-based commerce will see significant growth.


OpenAI is expanding into the AI e-commerce market, leveraging its more than 700 million weekly users. At the end of last month, OpenAI announced the introduction of an "instant checkout" feature that allows users to purchase products directly through ChatGPT. This feature will initially be available for products from the U.S. e-commerce platform Etsy and the Canada-based e-commerce platform Shopify.


Recently, OpenAI also formed a partnership with Walmart, the largest retailer in the United States, to enable consumers to purchase Walmart products directly through ChatGPT. Regarding this, Doug McMillon, Chairman and CEO of Walmart, stated that "a multimedia-based, personalized AI shopping experience will emerge."
