Samsung Heavy Industries Unveils 'Top Tier' Vision with Smart Shipyard Initiative

Accelerating Digital Transformation with 'S-EDP'
Doubling Automation Rate by 2030

Samsung Heavy Industries has declared its ambition to become a 'Top Tier' player in the global shipbuilding and offshore industry through design and production automation.

On October 29, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it held the 'Auto2Vision' event at Samsung Geoje Hotel in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do, where it unveiled the 'S-EDP (SHI-Engineering Data Platform),' the first automation platform established in the shipbuilding and offshore sector. This event was intended to connect advances in automation technology with the company's future vision.

The event was attended by more than 80 key figures from both Korea and abroad, including representatives from global oil majors Petronas and ENI, Vigor Marine from the United States, National Assemblyman Seo Iljun, and Min Kisik, Deputy Mayor of Geoje City.

According to Samsung Heavy Industries, S-EDP is a system where design data is automatically stored and shared, enabling web-based simultaneous access and real-time collaboration. This allows drawings, documents, and calculation sheets to be generated automatically, significantly shortening the design period and facilitating a shift from document-centered work processes to a data-driven framework.

The company plans to use S-EDP to more than double the rate of design automation by 2030 and to promote digital transformation (DX) by connecting data across all areas, including design, procurement, and production. In addition, Samsung Heavy Industries will use this as a foundation for building smart offices and smart factories, accelerating company-wide innovation in work processes. The company also intends to expand the application of S-EDP to its domestic and overseas sites and pursue a commercialization strategy by supplying it to overseas shipyards with which it has established partnerships.

Sung An Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries, stated, "The smart shipyard that Samsung Heavy Industries envisions is an organically integrated model of digital transformation (DX), artificial intelligence transformation (AX), and robotics transformation (RX). S-EDP will play a key role in the transition to a smart shipyard."
