Suwon Peace Butterfly to Hold Press Conference on Removal of 'Statue of Peace' in Germany on November 5

Suwon Peace Butterfly will soon hold a press conference regarding the removal of the 'Statue of Peace' in the Berlin area of Germany.

On October 29, Suwon Peace Butterfly announced that it will jointly hold a press conference with the Citizens’ Coalition Council on November 5 regarding the removal of the 'Statue of Peace' in Berlin. The event will take place in front of the Statue of Peace at Olympic Park, in front of Suwon City Hall.

In a press release issued that day, Suwon Peace Butterfly stated, "Over the past decade, Statues of Peace have been erected across Germany, including in Regensburg, Berlin, Kassel, Bonn, and Cologne. However, recently, the Statue of Peace in Berlin’s Mitte district was forcibly removed due to political pressure."

The statement continued, "This is not simply the removal of a sculpture, but an act of suppressing the voices of civil society calling for human rights and historical justice. Suwon Peace Butterfly and the Suwon Citizens’ Coalition Council view this incident as a setback for historical remembrance and an affront to the honor of the victims of the Japanese military’s sexual slavery. We urge the immediate restoration and reinstallation of the statue."

Han Jeonghwa, head of the Korea Verband, said, "The Statue of Peace is not just a symbol, but a civic pledge to remember the history of war and violence and to pass on the value of peace to future generations. We will reclaim the Berlin statue and, together with citizens around the world, will not stop our steps toward peace."

Through this joint press conference, Suwon Peace Butterfly and the Suwon Citizens’ Coalition Council plan to strengthen solidarity between Korean and German civil societies and to expand the network of international human rights and peace movements.
