Field-Based Housing Education Program for Young People Receives Positive Response
Yeongdeungpo District in Seoul (District Mayor Choi Hokwon) announced on October 28 that the “Young Independent Living: Field Experience” program, which was the first of its kind among Seoul’s district offices, has successfully concluded. This program was designed to help young people preparing for independent living to strengthen their self-reliance skills.
The recruitment for participants drew significant interest, resulting in a competition rate of 5 to 1, and approximately 20 final candidates were selected to join the program.

Through a preliminary special lecture, participants learned the basics of “house hunting,” including the structure of monthly and yearly rental contracts, deposit protection, and how to assess market prices. Afterwards, they were divided into the Shingil-Daerim area, the Dangsan-Yangpyeong area, and the Yeongdeungpo-Mullae area, where they visited studio apartments and officetels with licensed real estate agents to gain practical experience.
On site, the real estate agents provided guidance on precautions when signing lease agreements, location analysis, and methods for comparing monthly and yearly rental prices. The young participants were able to systematically develop their ability to evaluate housing by directly checking factors such as lighting, noise, signs of leakage, and nearby amenities.
One participant shared, “I was able to directly feel the difference between the rooms I saw in smartphone photos and the actual space,” adding, “Learning in detail about the elements to check before signing a contract was very helpful.” Another participant commented, “I learned that comprehensive conditions such as transportation, safety, and living environment are more important than just the cost.”
The participating real estate agents evaluated that this field experience is practically helpful in avoiding risks such as rental scams and property defects. They also emphasized to the young people the importance of safety and transaction transparency, rather than making decisions based solely on rental costs.
Choi Hokwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, said, “Experiencing and learning firsthand on site will be the first step toward independence,” and added, “We will continue to implement various support policies to help young people become self-reliant.”
