Gwangmyeong City Becomes First Local Government to Receive President of the Korean Red Cross Commendation

Recognized for Advancing Humanitarianism and Expanding ESG Participation

Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province received the President of the Korean Red Cross Commendation at the 120th anniversary ceremony of the Korean Red Cross held on the 27th. This marks the first time a local government has been awarded this commendation since the founding of the Red Cross.

The city explained that it was recognized for its leadership in realizing the spirit of humanitarianism by consistently pursuing public-private partnership projects and discovering new sponsors since the establishment of the Gwangmyeong branch, the first under the Gyeonggi Province chapter of the Red Cross. In particular, the city contributed to spreading social value by promoting various collaborative programs aimed at addressing welfare blind spots and implementing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives.

The city has strengthened the local welfare safety net by building public-private partnership models such as discovering regular sponsors for the "Golden Lunchbox Project" to support single-person households and expanding ESG participation among businesses and civic groups. This year, through the "Golden Lunchbox Project," the city identified 200 young and middle-aged single-person households in welfare blind spots, providing them with meal support based on local currency and emotional care services.

Seungwon Park, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, stated, "This award is a valuable achievement made together with our citizens and is the result of setting the best example of humanitarian spirit at the local government level. We will continue to strengthen our cooperation with the Red Cross to build a city of sharing and mutual growth."
