Former Vice President Kamala Harris Also Signals Another Bid

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has risen as a prominent Democratic contender by directly clashing with U.S. President Donald Trump, has revealed that he is considering running in the next presidential election.

'Anti-Trump' California Governor Newsom Considers 2028 Presidential Run

On October 26 (local time), Governor Newsom appeared on the CBS News program "Sunday Morning" and was asked whether he is considering a run in the 2028 presidential election. He responded, "Yes, it would be a lie to say otherwise." He added, "I'm looking forward to seeing who emerges in 2028 and who will rise to that moment."

In the interview, Governor Newsom stated, "My goal is for the Democratic Party to regain control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections," and added, "If the Democrats win the midterms, President Trump's presidency will effectively be over."

Governor Newsom, who took office in January 2019, is currently serving his second term, which will end in January 2027. Due to term limits in the state constitution, a third consecutive term is not allowed.

Governor Newsom's profile has risen as he has stood up to President Trump. When President Trump threatened to deploy federal troops to California, Newsom confronted him directly and also voiced criticism over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. In July, he visited South Carolina and several other cities in key swing states, fueling speculation about his potential presidential bid.

Not only Governor Newsom, but also former Vice President Kamala Harris, who ran in last year's presidential election, has expressed her intention to run again, indicating that competition within the Democratic Party is expected to be fierce. Former Vice President Harris recently stated publicly, "I will probably run for president again."

Previously, President Trump has hinted at the possibility of a third term, which is strictly prohibited by the Constitution. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution stipulates that "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice," but President Trump has sparked controversy since earlier this year by suggesting, "There is a way it can be done."
