An Eco-Friendly Landmark Shaped by Community Input
Geumcheon District in Seoul (District Mayor Yoo Seonghun) is moving forward with the “Climate Change Safety Park Project” to respond to abnormal weather conditions such as heat waves, cold spells, and fine dust, as well as to promote residents’ health and leisure. The project site is the Mokgol Mountain Hillside Park in Sihung 4-dong, at San 138-3 and its vicinity, where the district will significantly strengthen the green infrastructure of this key local recreation area.
The district will invest a total of 2.1 billion won to create a climate change-responsive green park on an 8,412-square-meter site at the hillside park. Construction will begin in October, with completion targeted for May next year. The newly developed park will be transformed into a “climate-adaptive park” where residents can safely enjoy the facilities even during climate crises such as heat waves and cold spells. Key features will include a water cooler terrace, a rainwater circulation system, and cooling fog installations, along with advanced facilities to create a pleasant environment.
In particular, at the center of the park, a “natural-style wind corridor stream” will be created with minimal alteration to the terrain, preserving the unique topography and green axis of the hillside park and providing a natural waterscape. The water cooler terrace is designed to preserve the existing trees and landscape as much as possible, while offering decks, observation spaces, and water features to serve as a comfortable resting area even during heat waves.
Yoo Seonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon District, stated, “Securing safe and pleasant green spaces that proactively respond to the climate crisis is a key task for a sustainable urban environment,” adding, “We will continue to gather residents’ feedback throughout the construction process to complete this project as a leading eco-friendly landmark in the area.”
Meanwhile, Geumcheon District began design work in November last year, and has since held expert advisory meetings and received review by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Through three rounds of resident briefings, the district actively incorporated diverse opinions and encouraged strong community participation in the creation of this eco-friendly green space.
