The National Assembly Audit Enters Final Stage... Anticipated Clashes Over Kim Hyunji and Real Estate

The National Assembly will complete comprehensive audits by each standing committee by October 30. From November 4 to 6, the National Assembly Steering Committee, the Gender Equality and Family Committee, the Intelligence Committee, and other concurrent standing committees will conduct their audits. The ruling and opposition parties are expected to continue their fierce debate over real estate policies and whether Kim Hyunji, the First Secretary to the President, will appear as a witness during the audits.

According to the National Assembly Secretariat on October 27, the National Assembly Steering Committee will conduct an audit of the Presidential Secretariat, the National Security Office, and the Presidential Security Service on November 6. On October 29, the committee will first discuss the adoption of institutions, general witnesses, and reference witnesses for the audit. Attention is focused on whether Kim, a key aide who has worked alongside President Lee Jaemyung for more than 20 years, will be selected as a witness.

The October 15 real estate policy is also a key issue. Lee Sangkyung, former First Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, was originally scheduled to appear as a witness at the comprehensive audit of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on October 29, but this was canceled following his resignation over the gap investment issue. Instead, the People Power Party is expected to pressure the Lee Jaemyung administration by questioning the effectiveness of the October 15 policy. In addition, during the audit of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee scheduled for the same day, continued confrontation between the ruling and opposition parties over prosecution and judicial reform is expected.
